Pig Ear Recall: May 2011

By Stephanie Summers

Most of us have not yet forgotten about the Melamine Disaster that occurred in commercial dog food, which was made in China. We still remember the subsequent scares about dog treats and other brands of dog food following that initial fiasco.  Now we have a new scare.

I have known about the Salmonella, which is contained in many pig ear treats for well over 10 years. In addition, I have counseled my customers about the potential dangers of handling pig ears. Distributors and processing supervisors have told me that the only problem to watch out for was the human handling of the product.  I was informed that, as long as hands were washed thoroughly after handling the pig ears, contamination would not occur, and the pig ears were basically safe. Not so fast!  After reading and researching further, I have found that the actual ingestion of pig ears can be a potential problem for dogs.

It turns out that dogs can contract Salmonella, as well as humans. Symptoms can include, but not be limited to; diarrhea, lethargy, fever and vomiting. Some pets tolerate the poisoning better than others, suffering minimally from a decreased appetite, abdominal pain or fever. Our pets can even be carriers of the bacteria, while not exhibiting symptoms themselves. Be aware that they can infect others, (humans or animals), with the Salmonella bacteria. If your dog has ingested suspected products, or is suffering from symptoms, which are similar to those listed above, please seek counsel from your local veterinarian.

There is a current pig ear recall. The possible Salmonella contamination was discovered through random product testing in Washington State. Jones Natural Chews has voluntarily recalled 300 boxes of the pig ears. The products being pulled are sold under the brand names: Jones Natural Chews, Blain’s Farm & Fleet and Country Butcher Dog Chews and were shipped between September 15th and November 2nd of 2010. They were distributed to retailers in the states of; Connecticut, Iowa, Illinois, Massachusetts, Maine, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, North Carolina, North Dakota, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Washington State.

At Operation Sheepdog Herding, we don’t carry pig ear products, nor have we fed them to our own dogs for more than 10 years.  It is simply not worth the risk! Our product focus is on locally made dog chews, such as bully sticks and deer antlers. Treats sold at Operation Sheepdog Herding are made in the USA with human grade ingredients.

Try the cooked dog treats, such as Sniffer Snacks (made with wholesome ingredients), Zukes (for the soft jerky types and in a variety of flavors), Bully sticks (with great low prices and without that terrible odor that other bully’s have) or Deer antlers (a calcium rich bone that does not splinter as other bones do.) You will be glad that you chose quality treats, made in the USA and produced with safe ingredients for your best friend. Do right by your dog, he does right by you!
